Leisure offering at Meadowhall reaches new heights with arrival of Rock Up

3 December2018

Rock Up, the UK’s leading rock-climbing operator, has selected Meadowhall, one of the UK’s premier shopping and leisure destinations, for its fifth location.

The 2,000 sq ft site will open next month and be in prime position to attract the 24 million people annually who visit the centre. Rock Up at Meadowhall will have 17 climbing walls towering 8 metres-high, and a soft play area with a café.

Heidi Duckworth, Executive Chairman, Rock Up commented: “We started Rock Up as a group of new parents with a love for climbing and adventure. Our idea was to give young people who may never have been near a mountain the opportunity to climb and discover new passions. British Land were pioneering in their approach to take a chance on us back when we first started, and with Meadowhall’s recent refurbishment we thought it would be the perfect location for our fifth site.”

Rock Up started in 2016 and has been growing its fan base, with five centres now open across the country. This will be Rock Up’s third site with British Land, having opened its first centre at Whiteley in Hampshire which was followed by Rock Up Hull, located in St. Stephen’s shopping centre.

Richard Crowther, Asset Manager for British Land, said: “Since our transformation of Meadowhall we’ve been able to bring in a variety of new brands, giving consumers more reasons to visit and enjoy Meadowhall. Rock Up is a great addition to our growing leisure offer, which complements the strong retail brands at the centre.”

Rock Up will join Air Haus, the UK’s first interactive inflatable park, as well as popular leisure experiences including Jump Trampoline Park and Vue Cinema. The centre also has a strong food and beverage brands offering, including Five Guys, Nandos, Wagamama and McDonalds.

This expands their appeal to a broader range of occupiers, creating enduring demand and driving sustainable, long term performance.

Our Retail portfolio is focused on Regional and Local multi-let centres, and accounts for 48% of our portfolio. Our Offices portfolio comprises three office-led campuses in central London as well as high quality standalone buildings and accounts for 49% of our portfolio. Increasingly our focus is on providing a mix of uses and this is most evident at Canada Water, our 53-acre redevelopment opportunity where we have plans to create a new neighbourhood for London.

Sustainability is embedded throughout our business. Our places, which are designed to meet high sustainability standards, become part of local communities, provide opportunities for skills development and employment and promote wellbeing. Our industry-leading sustainability performance led to British Land being awarded a five-star rating in the 2017 Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark for the second year running.
